Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., doubled down on his remarks praising previous Cuban dictator Fidel Castro during a televised town hall on Monday night after he raised eyebrows for enhancing the harsh leader’s education reforms.

” When Fidel Castro initially entered into power … you understand what he did? He started a significant literacy program. It was a great deal of folks in Cuba at that point who were illiterate and he formed the Literacy Brigade … and they went out and they assisted people discover to read and compose You understand what? I think teaching people to read and write is an advantage,” Sanders said in reaction to criticism.

Sanders, a self-described Democratic socialist, was criticized for remarks he said during a “60 Minutes” interview over the weekend.

” We’re really opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba,” Sanders said, ” however you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad.
